A Ganglion is a small cystic swelling containing viscid fluid and connected either with a joint membrane or tendon sheath.
It is generally benign in nature that is they are not
cancerous and will not spread to the others area . It also known as
Bible cysts, are more common in women, and 70% occur in people
between the ages of 20-40. Rarely, ganglion cysts can occur in
children younger than 10 years.
LOCATION :- It usually appears on or around joint and
tendons in the hand or foot. It is most frequently located
around the wrist and or fingers. A ganglion cyst when grows on the
top of the wrist ,called a dorsal ganglion and others are found on
the underside of the wrist between the thumb and pulse point of the
hand, at the end joint of a finger, or at the base of a finger.
A Ganglion cyst containing thick, sticky, clear,
colorless, jellylike muco polysaccharide rich fluid within fibrous
tissue or, occasionally, muscle bone or a semilunar cartilage.
Sometimes it is containing cell bodies of neurons which is located
outside the central nervous system and forms an enlargement upon a
nerve or upon two or more nerves at their point of junction or
separation. Then it is called nerve ganglion.
The sizes of ganglion cyst is depends upon the
contents and amount of the cyst. It generally starts from pea shaped
small sized and gradually increasing its sizes. Sometimes, gradually
decreasing its sizes automatically with or without pain.
Commonly single in number. Rarely multiple in

It is generally caused due to some kind of trauma to the joint but
the cause may not be evident in all cases. The trauma causes the
tissue of the joint to break down, forming ganglion cyst. Some

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:-
Onset is insidious.Gradually increasing
its sizes. Cystic swelling gradually appearing on the affected
part.Mild discomfort feeling during wrist movement due to swelling.
Pain may or may not be present.If pain is present , it is usually
chronic in nature and worse by joint motion. On palpitation Soft or
very firm swelling. Tense. Non-tender. Not movable. DIAGNOSIS:- A
Simple physical examination is sufficient to diagnosis the ganglion
cyst. Usually no investigations are required since it is clearly
visualized on the affected part. X-Ray of affected part can be
done to exclude the others possible causes.
